Teen Behind-the-Wheel Lessons in the South Metro: What Families Should Know

Finding the right teen behind-the-wheel program is an important part of learning to drive.

Minnesota teen drivers are required to complete six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, but at ReadySetDrive!, we believe those six hours should be about more than simply completing a requirement.

It's about building a strong foundation.

Our one-on-one teen behind-the-wheel lessons focus on developing the core driving skills students need to become safe, confident, and independent drivers. But learning how to perform a driving skill is only part of it.

We also want students to understand why they're doing it.

Why do we look farther ahead?

Why does stopping position matter?

Why do we use SMOG every time we move the vehicle left or right?

When students understand why a driving skill matters, they have a better understanding of the potential risks around them and can make better driving decisions.

Every student is different.

Some students come to us with quite a bit of driving experience. Others are just getting started. Some skills come naturally, while others take more time and practice.

That's why we adjust throughout every lesson based on the driver sitting next to us.

ReadySetDrive! provides personalized, one-on-one teen behind-the-wheel instruction for families throughout the South Metro, including Apple Valley, Eagan, Rosemount, Lakeville, Farmington, Burnsville, Inver Grove Heights, Mendota Heights, and the ISD 196 community.

Our goal isn't simply to help students complete their required behind-the-wheel hours.

Our goal is to help build safe, confident, independent drivers.

More Than Completing Six Hours

Minnesota requires teen drivers to complete six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, typically completed over three driving lessons.

At ReadySetDrive!, we want to make those six hours count.

Our teen behind-the-wheel program includes three two-hour, one-on-one driving lessons with a licensed teacher. Each lesson builds on the one before it while giving students opportunities to develop their skills in different driving situations.

The first lesson focuses on core driving skills and helping students develop a better understanding of why those skills matter.

The second lesson takes a deeper look at turns and intersections, along with parking skills.

During the third lesson, we start putting everything together. Students apply what they've learned in more complex driving situations, including a drive to Minneapolis and/or St. Paul, and we spend time reviewing the Minnesota road test and how the skills we've worked on apply to the test.

But no two students are exactly the same.

We adjust throughout every lesson based on the needs of the student sitting in the driver's seat. If a student needs more time with a particular skill, we spend more time on it. If they're ready for something more challenging, we can move forward.

After each lesson, students receive an evaluation with skills marked as Meets or Developing, along with reminder notes when appropriate. This gives students and families a better understanding of what we worked on and what they can continue practicing at home.

The goal isn't just to complete six hours. It's to make those six hours valuable.

Every Driver Is Different

Six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction may be the requirement, but every student develops at a different pace.

Some students are ready to keep building their skills through supervised practice at home. Others may want or need more time working one-on-one with a licensed teacher.

That's why ReadySetDrive! students have the option to purchase additional behind-the-wheel instruction.

Additional driving time can be used to work on specific skills, build confidence, get more experience in challenging driving situations, or simply spend more time practicing with a teacher before driving independently.

We also offer a Teen Road Test Prep session for students who want additional preparation before taking the Minnesota Class D road test. This gives students another opportunity to review important driving skills, practice parking maneuvers, and work through areas where they may still need additional practice.

There isn't one amount of practice that's right for every new driver.

Some students need more time than others, and that's okay.

The goal is to give each student the instruction and practice they need to become a safe, confident, and independent driver.

Learning Continues Outside the Car

Behind-the-wheel lessons are only part of learning to drive.

Students aren't going to remember everything we talk about during a two-hour driving lesson. That's one of the reasons we created the ReadySetDrive! Student Portal.

The Student Portal gives students a place to go back and review the skills and concepts we've worked on in the car.

If they want to review SMOG, stopping position, looking farther ahead, parking, yellow lights, turns, right-of-way, or another driving skill, the resources are there.

Students can also find resources to help with supervised driving practice and preparation for the Minnesota road test.

And the portal continues to grow.

If we notice students asking the same questions or struggling with the same driving skill, we look for ways to create another resource that can help. In many ways, the students we work with help shape the resources that future ReadySetDrive! students will use.

The goal is to give students a resource they can continue using between behind-the-wheel lessons, while preparing for their road test, and even after their six hours of professional instruction are complete.

Professional instruction provides the foundation. Supervised practice builds confidence. Together they create safe, confident, independent drivers.
