What to Know Before Scheduling Your Teen's Minnesota Road Test
Scheduling your teen's Minnesota road test can sometimes be frustrating, especially when the appointment you're hoping for isn't available.
But understanding how Minnesota's Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) scheduling system works can make the process much easier.
At ReadySetDrive!, I regularly help families navigate this process. Here are some important things to know before you begin looking for your teen's road test appointment.
You Can Start Looking 30 Days Before Your Teen Turns 16
Families can access the Minnesota DVS road test scheduling system 30 days before their teen's 16th birthday.
However, the system only displays appointments up to 30 days in advance.
That means when you first become eligible to schedule, you'll only see appointments available on your teen's birthday.
The following day, you'll be able to see appointments for their birthday and the day after. Each additional day opens another day of potential appointments.
Understanding this rolling 30-day scheduling window is important. Just because you can't see appointments for a particular date yet doesn't mean those appointments are unavailable. That date may simply be outside the scheduling window.
Don't Panic If No Appointments Are Available
It's common to log in to the DVS scheduling system and find that no road test appointments are available, especially when you're first eligible to schedule.
Don't panic. Just keep checking.
Just because you don't see appointments available on your teen's 16th birthday when you first log in doesn't mean appointments won't become available for that date.
Minnesota DVS continues adding testing appointments, so there's a good chance additional appointments will eventually become available for the date you're looking for.
A date with no available appointments today may have openings tomorrow or later in the week.
Check regularly, even if you've already looked earlier in the day. New appointments can appear at different times as DVS adds testing slots or existing appointments become available.
The important thing is to be patient and persistent. Don't assume a date is unavailable just because nothing appears the first time you check.
You Don't Need to Drive Across Minnesota
There are eight road test testing stations within approximately an hour of Apple Valley, giving South Metro families several options when looking for an appointment.
When scheduling your road test, the DVS system will ask you to enter your ZIP code. The system then sorts testing stations from closest to farthest based on that ZIP code.
Don't limit your search to the first location listed. Check the other nearby testing stations, too. You may find an appointment that works better for your family at a different location.

And there's no need to schedule a road test in Duluth just because you can't find something nearby—unless you're looking for an excuse to take a day trip!
The Midnight Scheduling Myth
You may have heard that the best time to find a road test appointment is at midnight because the DVS scheduling system resets and releases new appointments.
That's not true.
I've personally confirmed with Minnesota DVS that the scheduling system does not reset at midnight.
Appointments become available when DVS adds them to the system, not at a specific time each day.
There's no need to stay up until midnight hoping for a better chance of finding an appointment.
Book an Appointment, Then Keep Looking
My recommendation is to book the first reasonable appointment you can find, even if it isn't the date you're hoping for.
That way, you already have a road test scheduled, and you can continue looking for an appointment on your preferred date.
You can check the DVS scheduling system as often as you'd like without losing your existing appointment. If a better date or location becomes available, you can book that appointment instead.
Your original appointment is only replaced when you actually book another one. Simply searching for other available appointments won't affect your existing reservation.
The important thing is to get an appointment on the calendar first. Then keep checking for something that works better for your family.
Remember, DVS continues adding testing appointments, so just because your preferred date isn't available today doesn't mean it won't become available later.
Save Time by Pre-Applying for Your Driver's License
Before heading to the DVS for your teen's road test, we recommend completing Minnesota's online driver's license pre-application. This can save time by allowing you to complete some of the required paperwork before arriving at the testing station.
There are two important things to remember:
- Your teen must be at least 16 years old to pre-apply for a driver's license.
- Complete the online pre-application no more than 30 days before the scheduled road test. If your teen is already 16 but their road test is more than 30 days away, wait until you're within that 30-day window.
Taking the Road Test on Their 16th Birthday?
If your teen is taking their road test on their 16th birthday, you'll need to complete the online pre-application that morning, before heading to the testing station.
If you try to pre-apply before your teen turns 16, the system will only allow you to pre-apply for an instruction permit, not a driver's license.
Taking a few minutes to complete this step at the right time can help make your road test day go a little more smoothly.
Ready to Schedule Your Teen's Road Test?
The most important thing to remember is that finding an appointment may take some patience.
Start looking when your teen becomes eligible, check multiple testing locations, and don't get discouraged if your preferred date isn't available right away.
Book the first reasonable appointment you can find, then keep looking for something better.
Minnesota DVS continues adding appointments, and checking regularly gives you more opportunities to find a date that works for your family.
