How Minnesota Road Test Results Are Delivered: What Families Need to Know
Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) has changed how students receive their Class D road test results.
Effective November 16, 2026, students no longer receive their official pass-or-fail results directly from the examiner at the end of their road test. Instead, results are delivered by email or regular mail.
Here's what Minnesota families need to know about the process.
How Will Students Receive Their Road Test Results?
Under the updated process:
- Email Results: Students who provide an email address will receive their official road test results by email within one hour of completing their test.
- Mailed Results: Students who do not provide an email address will receive their results through the U.S. Postal Service.
- Examiner Feedback: Examiners will still provide a brief discussion and general feedback after the road test, but they will no longer tell students whether they passed or failed.
Why Did Minnesota Make This Change?
According to Minnesota DVS, the updated process was implemented with employee safety in mind.
The change also allows examiners to enter or verify results in the DVS computer system before they're officially released.
DVS says the process gives customers additional time to gather the documents needed to apply for their driver's license.
What Should Parents and Teen Drivers Know?
Before your teen takes their Minnesota road test, keep these reminders in mind:
- Provide an Email Address: Make sure DVS has an email address where your teen can receive their results.
- Check Your Email: Official results should arrive within an hour of completing the road test.
- Listen to the Examiner: Even though the examiner won't share the pass-or-fail result, pay attention to the feedback provided after the test.
The road test remains an important step toward earning a Minnesota driver's license. The difference is how students learn whether they've passed or failed.
